Young Voices, Big Impact: The Band Shines at Angell Town Big Lunch

Date: Saturday 28 June 2024
Location: Outside Brixton Wings Centre, Angell Town Estate

On a sunny Saturday in June, the sound of community came to life as 12 young musicians from Brixton Wings took the stage at the Angell Town Big Lunch & Car-Free Day. Held right outside our youth centre, the event brought together residents of all ages for a day of food, celebration, and creativity and our band provided the perfect soundtrack.

From piano and acoustic guitar to bass, vocals, and drumming, our young performers lit up the space with a live set built from weeks of dedication in our after-school music sessions. These weren’t just performances they were proud moments of personal expression and teamwork.

“At first, I felt nervous, but when I saw the crowd smiling and clapping, I felt proud. It made me want to keep going and do even better next time,”
one young performer shared after coming off stage.

The energy was electric. Families, neighbours, and friends gathered to support the performers clapping, dancing, and cheering as each group took their turn. These are the kinds of moments that show the true power of music: to uplift, to inspire, and to bring people together.

This performance wasn’t just about showcasing talent. It was about giving young people the space and support to step forward with confidence, to be heard, and to feel a sense of pride in what they can achieve. It was also a reflection of the consistent effort our participants put into their weekly rehearsals, supported by our dedicated music tutors.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support, and especially to the young people who gave their all on stage. You continue to show us just how powerful youth voices can be.
