Start and Restart Workshop
Supporting Early-Stage Community Organisations
Our first workshop of the year, the Start and Restart Workshop, took place on 18 December and brought together 15 small charities and community groups at different stages of their journey. Designed for organisations that are either just beginning or rethinking their next steps, the session created space for reflection, learning, and shared experience.
The workshop was intentionally informal, creating a supportive environment where every voice was encouraged and valued. Participants were invited to talk openly about the work they are currently doing, as well as projects they hope to develop in the future. This approach helped build confidence, spark ideas, and highlight the power of peer learning among organisations facing similar challenges.
A key strength of the session was the opportunity for participants to learn not only from the facilitators, but also from one another. Hearing a range of experiences helped organisations clarify their own thinking, validate their challenges, and recognise common themes around capacity, funding, and sustainability.
The workshop was supported by Eoin and Martyn from Integrate, who each brought practical insight tailored to early-stage and community-led organisations.
Eoin delivered a short and accessible presentation on funding and best approaches for start-ups, exploring the funding landscape and sharing practical guidance on how new and developing organisations can position themselves more effectively. This helped participants gain a clearer understanding of funding routes, expectations, and how to take realistic next steps.
Martyn led a discussion on the benefits and pitfalls of using AI, offering a balanced and thoughtful exploration of how digital tools can support small organisations, while also highlighting potential risks and limitations. The session encouraged participants to think critically about technology and to consider where AI can add value without losing sight of organisational values or capacity.
By the end of the workshop, participants left with:
Greater clarity about their organisational direction and priorities
Increased confidence in talking about their work and future plans
Improved understanding of funding fundamentals for early-stage organisations
A more informed and balanced view of how tools such as AI can be used responsibly
Stronger connections with other local charities and community groups
The Start and Restart Workshop set a positive tone for the year ahead, reinforcing Brixton Wing’s commitment to supporting small charities and community groups through practical learning, shared knowledge, and inclusive spaces for collaboration. We look forward to building on this momentum through future workshops and continued support for the local voluntary and community sector.
